Children's Concerts

In keeping with the second part of our Mission, each year the Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Jay Dunnahoo, presents two concerts for all 3rd and 4th graders attending school in the area of Kerrville. The children come from as far as 20 miles away to attend these; they are enjoyed by students and teachers alike.

The last Children's Concerts was held on March 5, 2009, and followed an abridged program as outlined for that date, with special explanations for the children. Before the concert, musicians walked up and down the aisles showing the students cellos, trombones, trumpets, violins and a tuba. Next year's concerts will be held at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM on March 4, 2010, see program.

The concerts, at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM, were arranged and managed by Wes Lane, an SOH Board member. The two concerts were attended by over 1400 3rd and 4th Graders, including home-schooled. The afternoon performance was a sell-out; based on correspondence and comments received, the favorite piece in the program was Tubby the Tuba, but surprisingly the Rachmaninoff Rhapsody also held their interest.

Besides the  Kerrville Independent School System, students from Ambleside, Comfort, Center Point, Fredericksburg, Ingram, Medina, Notre Dame, St. Mary's Elementary and Stonewall were invited together with home-schooled students throughout the area. All attended except those from Comfort, St. Mary's and Hunt. 22 home-schooled students attended.
