Deana and Phil Johnson

The North meets the SouthÖthatís how it began one day in Rochester, NY, in 1978. Having just taken freshman placement exams at the Eastman School of Music, Philip Johnson, born and raised in Buffalo, NY, met Deana Moore, born and raised in Atlanta, GA, met at a stop light on Main Street. Little did they know that this chance meeting would forever change their lives. After graduating with Bachelorís degrees in music in 1982, they went their separate ways, but fate once again intervened. With a graduate teaching assistantship in oboe, Deana began her Masterís degree at Baylor University. Little did she know that on the first day of classes, Philip would receive the same offer. After one year at Baylor, Philip won a First Violin position with the San Antonio Symphony. Deana finished her degree in 1984, and later that spring they were married in San Antonio - thatís when they became Texans! Deana, Orchestra Director at John Jay High School in San Antonio, began her varied career teaching in the public schools, pursuing a doctorate at UT Austin, teaching at Texas State University, playing with the San Antonio Symphony, and conducting for Youth Orchestras of San Antonio.

Phil, on the other hand, finished his masterís degree at Baylor in 1986, and continues to play in the San Antonio Symphony, in addition to teaching violin at St. Maryís University. The Johnsonsí proudest accomplishments are their three children and one grandchild. Their oldest daughter plays oboe and is a graduate teaching assistant in Geography at Texas State University; their second daughter, who performed with Symphony of The Hills last season, is a violin major at Baylor University; their son is an 8th grade percussionist at Stinson Middle School; and their 7-month old grandson, who is in the early stages of spoiling, loves to listen to classical music. In addition to family and music, the Johnsons love to travel and visit major league baseball parks.
